Modern music videos are primarily made and
used as a marketing device intended to promote
the sale of a band’s music. U2 videos epitomise this
modern performance style, employing rhythmic
cross-cutting, contrasting long shots,
close-ups, and unusual shots and camera angles.
All these are utilised for their new album
No Line On The Horizon.
The video for their latest single “Get on
Your Boots”, is directed by Alex Courtes,
the european director behind the videos for
U2’s “Vertigo,” “City of Blinding Lights,” the
White Stripe’s “Seven Nation Army,” and
Kasabian’s “Shoot the Runner,” as well as many
others.
The Beatles are credited with the invention
of music videos. They used it to promote their
record releases without having to make
in-person appearances. Since then bands
have developed the genre into a highly
sophisticated medium. No
Line On The Horizon is no exception.
U2 videos are
highly elaborate and use vibrant colour footage
shot on location around the world. They are
notable for their use of hand-held camera work,
rhythmic editing, slow motion shots and
reversals. These mini-films on No
Line illustrate the songs in an
artful, impressionistic manner rather than
trying to simulate an idealised performance or
depict a narrative or plot.
U2 Videos continue
to be innovative...
With its 12th studio album, No Line on the Horizon, U2
continues to set the standard not only for the
music but also the videos. Horizon ranks with
the group's best, boldest work and grows more
resonant with repeated listening and
watching.
U2's unmistakable yet ever-evolving sound
with no line on the horizon
results in tracks with both anthemic
sweep and intricate nuance, showcaseing the
musicians' individual and collective
strengths.
With Horizon U2 get out of the comfort zone
into uncharted territory. They still
haven’t found what they’re looking
for. The band is as full of questions and
thirsty for inspiration as ever, eager to
continue exploring and growing.
The Comcast media company are offering their
digital subscribers access to a whole range of
U2 videos and concert footage
through their on demand service.
