No Line On The
Horizon the latest album release from the
biggest band in the world, means that the
time has come for U2 to reclaim their rock 'n'
roll crown.
In some ways this is one of the most intriguing
u2 albums. But does
it deliver? While the emphasis is on
Zooropa-style experimentation, not everything
works.
With No Line On The
Horizon the huge, rousing tunes are still
there but there's a schism at the heart of this
their 12th studio album. About half of the new
album could be classed as having come from the
classic U2 mould - driving rhythms, wide open
guitars, impassioned vocals. The huge, rousing
tunes are there. The other half of No Line
examines the state of the planet from the
viewpoint of victims and witnesses. It is
the dicothemy between rock ‘n roll and a very
hard place.
So culturally significant have the band become
in recent years that some u2 concerts have been
hijacked by politicians to raise funds for
their campaigns. While U2 have been involved in
political activity themselves, backing
campaigns against nuclear testing and nuclear
power and Bono has campaigned to help the
financial and health crisis in Africa,
their concerts are strictly for U2 fans.
The band have been going to great heights to
promote No Line On The
Horizon including a surprise roof top
performance on top of BBC Broadcasting House,
in central London. They performed four tracks
during the 20-minute gig, including new songs
Get On Your Boots and Magnificent.
Get On Your Boots is also
featured by another media company,
Comcast. They are offering their digital
subscribers access to a whole range of
U2 videos and
concert footage through their on demand
service.
Now that you’ve been there, done that and
probably worn u2 tshirts can you still have
faith in this album to scale the heights we
have come to expect from U2?
Along with the release of the new album is the
u2 3d experience. This
was rated the No. 4 best-reviewed film and top
concert film in 2008 by Rottentomatoes.com.
This unique 3D imax film captures and immerses
fans in the magic of U2’s Vertigo concert in
Buenos Aires in 2008.
